About MEOnline

MEonline is CPD's web-based courseware application, and allows instructors to post course related information for students and conduct courses online in a secure environment. CPD uses MEonline to post handouts, homework assignments, and all other information about our graduate degree courses.

In addition, MEonline includes discussion boards and chat rooms, as well as an e-mail interface that lets you send messages to your instructor, site coordinator, CPD, or anyone in your class quickly and easily.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a list of common questions with regards to MEonline. A more throrough list can be found on the FAQs portion of the MEonline website. For more information about MEonline, contact meonline@umich.edu .

  1. How do I register for MEonline?
CPD will automatically register students affiliated with CPD programs. University students not affiliated with CPD will need to create their own accounts and add themselves to the course using the course ID and password distributed on the first day of class.
  2. Is there a MEonline Manual that I can download?
The MEonline manual is available here. In addition, you can access it once you have logged into MEonline, by clicking on the 'General Help' question mark in the upper lefthand corner of the 'Course Listings' page. This file is in PDF format, so you will need to have the Acrobat Reader from Adobe installed on your machine.
  3. What do I do if I forgot my username or password?
If you forget your user name or password, use the link on the front page for 'Forgotten Passwords'. On the forgotten password page, simply enter your email address into the form and hit the submit button. Your user name and password will be sent to you via email.
  4. What browser do you recommend using for MEonline?
It is highly recommended that you view MEonline with newer browsers. It is best viewed with Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher; however, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher will work as well. Please note that Netscape 6.x is not supported at this time. If you are using the Macintosh operating system, it is recommended that you use Netscape Navigator because Internet Explorer does not always refresh pages. IE uses cached pages, and it may be difficult to use MEonline on this platform with IE. Within your browser settings, make sure that both java and javascript are enable on your browser.
  5. I am trying to view video lecture files from a high-speed connection, but I can't connect to the server or am not receiving the video file. You may be operating behind a firewall that prevents you from viewing mulitmedia files. Check with your network administrator.
  6. I need to change personal information for my account -- such as the way my name appears or my email address.
To change this information, log onto MEonline. From the Course Listings Page, choose the Preferences link, then choose Edit User Information. This brings you to a page where you can change your username, password, email address and/or the way your name appears.
  7. What applications or plug-ins for my browser might I need to use all the features in MEonline?
MEonline itself does not require you to use any plug-ins; however, some useful applications to have for files that may be uploaded to the system are Adobe Acrobat and RealPlayer. Adobe Acrobat allows you to view any pdf files uploaded to MEonline. This application is needed to view most e-reserves. RealPlayer is used to view multimedia that faculty may upload to MEonline, such as a RealPresenter file, or a RealAudio or RealVideo file. You can download the free Real Player here . It is also important to remember that if you download any file from MEonline, you must have the application that the file was created in to view. For example, if you download a PowerPoint presentation, you must have Microsoft PowerPoint installed on your computer to view that file. Viewers for Microsoft Office files can be downloaded here .
  8. I am uploading a large file over a modem connection and I keep getting an error message.
Most likely while you were uploading, something has timed out--probably because the file is too large to easily transfer through a slower connection. It is possible that MEonline timed out, your ISP timed out, your browser timed out, or that you lost your connection with the internet. The best way to upload large files is to do the transfer over a LAN or a high-speed connection.
  9. I am trying to view a PDF document using Internet Explorer 5.0 and it's not working.
There are several things that could be wrong. Check your security settings in IE. Select the tools menu on the browser and choose Internet Options. Click on the security tab then click the Default button. This will reset your security settings back to the defaults. If that does not work and you have Adobe Acrobat 4.0 or higher open Acrobat and click on the file menu and choose Preferences, then General. Under Options, towards the bottom of the window, uncheck the Web Browser Integration box and click apply. Now when you click on a PDF file, Acrobat will launch outside the browser and you can view the file. The last option is to save the file directly to your hard drive. To save a file on a PC, right click on the link. A short menu of options should appear. In Internet Explorer, click on "SaveTarget As." In Netscape, click on "Save Link As." This should give you a directory to choose where to save the file. If you are using a browser other than Internet Explorer or Netscape, consult your browser's help function on how to save files. To save a file on a Macintosh computer, click on the file and drag it to your desktop. For more information, please view Adobe's support documentation .
